Poetry

MY NAME IS AKIN TO A YELLOW SUN
By Jaclyn Ho

My name is akin to a yellow sun
clear skies and gaa chíng--
bright weather
I was born Cantonese
born to wake up
under yellow bed sheets
of yellow stars
of yellow angels
with my mom by my side
My mom now sleeps alone
busily working papers
under a steady chartreuse desk light
My dad loves yellow
I'm his favorite color

his name is of the sun
he loved sharing the small amber chair with me
as we watched TV together
He grew old watching
saffron daylight
with a cold lemon tea in his hands
and Ricola in his pockets
I highlight in yellow
as the cold play
and I could relate when I wait
putting on Carmex lip balm
I remember
eagerly waiting
the good days of old
The trips and the drives
with three hearts of gold
in a golden car
under the bright sunlight
My name is Gaa Chíng
My name is akin to a yellow sun
