From The Summer Academy Issue Editors

The six-week Summer Creative Writing Academy at Pasadena City College is an incredible opportunity for students enrolled in Summer ENG 5A: Introduction to Creative Writing courses. Students learn the basics of Creative Writing from course instructors and benefit from weekly visits with Contemporary writers who give a reading of their work, a craft talk, and offer writing exercises.  Students engage in discussions about the work of these visiting writers and during class visits, students are able to ask questions about craft elements of creative writing. Students also learn how to express themselves through the craft of writing poems, stories, and literary non fiction narratives.

The Summer Creative Writing Academy program is co-funded by the Pasadena Festival of Women Authors and is coordinated by the Pasadena City College Creative Writing committee in the English & Language Studies (ELS) division at Pasadena city College. This multi-genre class includes close study and writing of: Poetry, Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Dramatic writing.

In this special Summer 2022 Online Issue of PCC Inscape Magazine, readers will find work by new student writers that was composed, developed, and workshopped with their peers in their summer classes.

All of these beginner writers worked hard to develop their authentic voices and to apply their new skills to their creative compositions. At a time in the world when there are so many hardships happening, the therapeutic benefits of writing creatively, of reading creative texts, and of engaging in a community of writers who support your work and creativity, cannot be understated.

This summer the editorial staff was made up of volunteer editors from the two ENG 5A sections taught by Prof. Brian Adler and Prof. Gail Brady. We experienced first-hand the benefits of writing creatively, and we also learned to apply important writing, editing, and creative problem-solving skills to our creative compositions as well as to our future careers, academic studies, and daily lives.

Thank you to the Pasadena Festival of Women Authors for underwriting this incredible Summer Creative Writing Academy, and thank you to Creative Writing Committee chair Dr. Kirsten Ogden and the PFWA grant writer, Prof. Simona Supekar. We'd also like to thank the Creative Writing committee of award-winning writing faculty at Pasadena City College, as well as Dean of English & Language Studies Division, Dr. Thongthiraj.

Special thanks go to Summer Academy visiting authors: Karin Cecile Davidson, Marco Wilkinson, KE Ogden, Allison Joseph, and Arthur Kayzakian. You have all championed the importance of writing and creativity in the world and have given students a safe space to explore their lives through literature.

Please enjoy this special issue, and we hope you'll share this issue with your friends on your social media outlets.

Sincerely,

Online Issue No.9 - Summer Creative Writing Academy 2022 Issue Editors,
Jonathan, Mallory, Jaclyn, and Irene Mae
