Announcing The Octavia Butler Short Fiction Prize

PCCInscape is thrilled to announce our affiliation with the Octavia Butler Estate in offering the Octavia Butler Fiction prizes! Ms. Butler was an alumnae of Pasadena City College and published as a student in the 1968 issue of Pipes of Pan (the former name of Inscape Magazine at PCC)! You can visit the PCC Library and the pccinscape website to view the magazine archives. The Creative Writing program at PCC wishes to honor Ms. Butler's legacy with two fiction prizes -- 1 for writers from across the United States, and 1 for a current Pasadena City College student.

Details about the prizes will be published in Spring 2021 and we are thrilled to announce that author Natasha Deon will be the finalist judge for both prizes!  You can read more about Natasha Deon below.

We're posting now to ask for a group of inaugural donors for this prize. We are a small, student-run publication, so your donation to this prize will make scholarship money available for our students and will recognize outstanding writers, all while honoring the legacy of Octavia Butler.
  • Our Founding Circle donors at $100 dollars or more will have their names featured as "Founding Circle Donors" and will receive chapbooks featuring the Octavia Butler Prize winners each year.
  • Our PCC Lancer Donors - The first 100 donors at 50$ or 25$ or more will receive a copy of the Octavia Butler Prize chapbook featuring our winners, and an issue of the Inscape Magazine featuring our Butler Prize finalists! Your name will be included in our donors list at the back of every issue of Inscape Magazine from here on as an inaugural prize donor!
  • Our PCC Pride Donors - Donors between 10-24$ will receive a copy of the Octavia Butler Prize chapbook and an issue of Inscape Magazine featuring our Butler Prize finalists, and your name will be included as a cherished donor in the Spring Issue featuring the finalists.
  • Our PCC Angel Donors - Donors below 10 dollars will have their name included on our donors list, and our gratitude for supporting this wonderful prize!
At this time, your donation is not tax-deductible, but we will be forever grateful.  Your Donation will go directly to our cash prize for winners and to sustaining the cash prize for years to come as well as funding a small stipend for our finalist judge each year. This prize was conceived by the 2018-2019 student staff of PCCInscape and was researched by 2018 PCC Student Rene Aguilar.
