Perspective #54

Picture

About the work

The piece I submitted is based off of the idea of perspectives, specifically on ageing. Melly Perez, a very talented special effects/beauty makeup artist (and my best friend), did my look for the photo. The original idea for the look wasn’t to portray any specific themes in relation to age. However, after viewing the photo I couldn’t help but notice the look of uncertainty in my own eyes while my hair is embellished in grey while my face is dazzled in glitter and a mean contour. The photo was taken right when I was about to turn 25–an age filled with so much taboo! It’s a tough age to turn partly because I am not a billionaire like I had dreamed of being by now, All of a sudden I have to be careful of my metabolism, worry about my aging eggs, and look forward to many dad conversations that usually open with “so what exactly are your plans in life?” I felt myself getting older in this photo, but I wasn’t exactly sure if I was ready.

Overall, perspective is very powerful. I could have sat here and been devoured by my quarter life crisis, but it’s much more freeing to accept the beauty that comes with each age. Perspective #541 ageing and dying are not the same thing, but they can be.

Kayleigh Spicer was born and raised in Southern California. She currently attends PCC. During her time at the college she has grown addicted to finding any creative outlets offered. She's studied theater, drawing, film, and even dance. Now she is pursuing writing, which is ironic because she was a horrible English student growing up.
