Along the Sands of the Sahara

by Kirk Richard Dolar
The sun shines brightly upon this field of gold
And the sea of sand shines back.

Countless travelers have walked its face
Yet no footsteps remain to trace.
Other earthly landscapes may change in shape and form
But the rolling hills of gold will stay the same.
Time itself escapes these precious grains.
No marking of an age passed,
Or indication of a moment gone by,
Implied on this flavescent canvas.

A barren province,
A desolate paradise,
It stretches infinitely
Like the starry firmament above.
Will I stumble upon the Little Prince
On this desultory path?

I wander alone searching for professed fortune.
Each step leaves behind a relic of my existence, my struggles
For the wind to blow away.

I walk along this field of gold
In search of the Alchemist’s treasure
Buried deep within my heart.

Born just outside Iloilo City, Philippines on the 22nd of December in 1998, Kirk Richard Dolar spent the first decade of his life playing tag with friends on the dusty roads of his hometown. When he arrived in the United States in 2011, Kirk lived in Chicago, Illinois for a brief three months, and saw snow for the first time. Following, his family moved to San Gabriel, California, a town just twenty minutes away from the heart of LA. Here is where Kirk has settled for almost ten years. He graduated from Gabrielino High in 2017, and now, at the age of 19, he is attending Pasadena City College, earning his AA in English. He hopes to transfer to UCLA as an Environmental Science major. Kirk is heavily inspired by the works of Dumas, Coelho, Saint-Exupery and Tolkien.
