Faculty Advisor - Dr. Kirsten Ogden
Professor Ogden has worked on the staffs of various literary journals, including New Delta Review, The Southern Review, Permafrost, Kenyon Review Online, and she edited the national literary journal Prism Review before taking on the role of Faculty Advisor to Pasadena City College's Inscape in 2016 after the retirement of the great Chris McCabe, the magazine's editor for many years prior. She says: "After teaching at Pasadena City College for 8 years now, I love the creativity of the students, and love even more the collaborative community environment between students, teachers, administrators and staff members. I really believe that the students at PCC are poised to positively change and impact the world in multiple ways -- through art, science, math, nursing, teaching, and creating. I feel really lucky to work with my students every day, and I'm lucky they put up with me and trust that there's a method to all my madness!" Professor Ogden's essays, poems, stories, blogs, and reviews have appeared in or are forthcoming from The Fourth River, Claudius Speaks, anderbo, Brevity Magazine, Kenyon Review Online, Louisiana Literature, Milk Journal, Phoebe, BAP Quarterly, Slipstream, Fringe Magazine, etc. She is a two-time judge for Georgia UP's Flannery O'Connor Short Fiction prize, a former Peter Taylor fellow in poetry and a poet laureate of Gambier, Ohio. "Some people live more in 20 years than others do in 80. It's not the time that matters, it’s the person" — The Doctor, Doctor Who, Season 3, Episode 6 What PCC is to me? Growing up I always got in trouble for taking my mom camera to take photos. Since then I have been doing photography for over 7 years. I decided to go to PCC to expand my world and ideas. After changing photography from my minor to my major I held editor titles on the PCC Courier Newspaper. Later, I became the photo editor for the PCC Spotlight Magazine. Thru a few of my classes I was able to be part of two different gallery shows. At the end of the day PCC is a stepping-stone to my dreams to better my life. What Inscape does for me? When first learning about Inscape I was excited to be able to learn more about different publication. Being part of Inscape is allowing me to experience and grow as a person and editor. I am delighted that I can be part and experiences a new chapter of Inscape. You want weapons? We’re in a library! Books! The best weapons in the world! — The Doctor, Doctor Who, Season 2, Episode 2 |

What is PCC to me? Pasadena City College is an academic institution that provides me with an immense educational experience -- an ensemble of fields including music and literature, the humanities, the sciences and mathematics. It is a place of adventurous possibilities in and out-of-class learning and experiments, and many opportunities to explore -- from student organizations to music and arts, sports and honors classes, to the scarlet canopy of the student body government -- the Associated Students of Pasadena City College. What are my Experiences and Goals? I am now a second year, second semester student, and I was a presidential candidate for A.S. I am also the president of True Reflections, a volunteering/services student organization, and a member of Green Seeds, the gardening club of PCC. I am majoring in English, and I hope to one day do a concentration in creative writing with a focus on poetry. My dream in life is to be a doctor, a poet, and a human rights activist. My passion is to save lives and to tend to ailments regardless of the history of those I serve. I wish to one day join Doctors Without Borders. I wish to be loyal to the people of the land regardless of nationality, religion, gender, and other barriers to loving and to serving--and to make changes to the world for the better, leaving it healthier and happier than when I first came, Why Inscape? I hope to use the power of language to uplift the hearts of others. I dream to play a part in the making of a better world through penmanship and passion. Starting on PCC grounds, I hope to share and amplify the beauty of the literary arts by helping in the making of a wondrous Inscape. Through my experience as a staff member on the school's creative writing magazine, I hope to nurture my craft by exposing myself to a diverse group of writers. I wish to learn and to evolve myself while taking on the quest of flaming the potentials of Inscape beyond bounds. |

PCC to me: is a greatly diverse and unique place with so many people of different backgrounds interacting with one another. The environment is very welcoming and fun, with so many things to do from the cultural heritage fair to the university day. Big Dreams: My dream is to be able to teach English as a high school teacher and take my talents to a charter school led by a great team of faculty and a devout principal. I also hope to one day write a book or short story that can be published. Inscape for Me: Inscape for me provides a safe place to do work and have great collaborations with people who are just as passionate about the written word as I am. It makes it very rewarding to be able to read original works submitted by students and find several gems that stand out with their creativity. |

PCC to me: When I was in high school, I was a total slacker. My works were never done before the deadline, but rather, it was done the minutes or seconds before it was due. As I graduated and came to PCC, it was a new beginning for me to get on top of my grades and my education. I came here to refocus everything that I’ve ever wanted to do in high school. I became more engaged with the school and used all the resources PCC has offered. PCC has given me a second chance to become the person that I’ve always wanted to be. My Goals and Dreams: After questioning myself this question many times throughout my entire life, I’ve finally came to the answer that I want to be a theoretical physicist. Not necessarily the next Einstein, but another great scientist that would leave a significant mark on the physics textbook or even the history of human lives. Inscape for me: Being part of Inscape for me is another large step in my life that would help me achieve something greater in the future. Cooperation with all the friendly and engaging members make me feel more open minded than I was before. The fact that all of us work together to produce something greater and impressive makes me feel like I’ve become part of my community and that I want to contribute more in the future. |

What is PCC to me? Pcc to me is a community where I can be myself without restrictions, a place where i can share and cultivate my individuality. Pcc is also a crossroads between the realities that we face in our day to day lives and learning about those realities. It is a place for the sophisticated and common people. What Inscape does for me? Inscape is like a new cool pair of sunglasses that allows me to see the world through a new lens. I am not only reading about peoples differences but our similarities. It reminds me that the little details we put so much excruciating pain into are also shared with others. Inscape reminds me the world is alive and the people in our world have a voice. “If you really want to do something, you will for sure find a way out; otherwise, you will find an excuse.” (unknown) "[...]Being able to remain creative is part of what keeps me alive." (Jason Becker, interpreted) PCC to me: Pasadena City College is not only an ocean of knowledge, but also a very first departure for my education as well as future career of a well-rounded research scientist - my desire when I decided to immigrate into the United States in early 2014. Moreover, more likely than in a regular four-year college, in PCC, I have the opportunity to meet and work with people from different ages, ethnics, and backgrounds which strengthens my understanding and makes me more flexible and open-minded. My Goals and Dreams: As mentioned, to be a well-rounded scientist is my lifelong pursuit and on top of that, I also want to be a “science artist” to inspire people. Well, I know nobody can ever tax a dream, and I want to be a multi-instrumentalist, musician and designer. What Inscape does for me: As a submission reader and photography editor, I think I can learn from Inscape more than I can contribute (if it is ever called “contribution”) (smile face) because my role really expose me to different ways of crafting a piece of art and force me to understand the “uniqueness” in every creatures in the universe. |

As a biker and a writer who did not enjoy a beneficial high school experience, Pasadena City College opens up wider worlds for me and lets me explore new ways of being a part of "Society" while engaging in the pleasure of continuous learning. Since first grade, school was not really for me until PCC, so as a student I expect to keep uncovering new meanings and abilities as a result of each academic experience. Hungry for knowledge and mechanically inclined, I am hoping to keep pursuing my formal education as well as my extracurricular learning to the point where I can make many of my big dreams real. Riding, building and increasingly designing motorcycles is bound to have a prominent place supplemented by other aspects of vehicles and speed. Dealing with people, knowing how to communicate, and fitting in well enough to get on my motorcycle and ride free is also important support for a happy future as a biker. Those are inevitable for my future, but I also look forward to exercising continued creative control over my life while being surrounded by people who support me and help deal with obstacles that are also inevitable. At Inscape, Prof. Ogden and our talented, unique team make our staff work an exciting road as we navigate ways to convey the voices of Pasadena City College as well as the creators who submit from outside our school. Bringing these many pieces together into an issue with a strong voice of its own is a challenge I am confident our team can do more than just meet. Hard work, fun, self-expression, and a purpose that goes beyond any of us as individuals — these are great parts of a whole that soon will include our Inscape issue's readers. |

Born and raised in Los Angeles quite a long time ago, I grew up worrying about smog, brush fires, and the bomb. Fortunately, my neighborhood had a great library and wonderful schools. My happiest childhood hours were spent reading Nancy Drew, daydreaming, and creating adventures with my little sisters and the other kids on our street. Looking back, I can see that my life has always been about reading and writing. I went to Occidental College and Cal State University, Northridge, for degrees in English. I taught college English, wrote for a small town newspaper and a big city art journal, worked in my children’s school library, published five biographies for young readers, taught adult English-learners, and work today as a ghost-blogger. Always reading, always writing, I encourage others to do the same. |

Just another foo from the streets of LA, doing as I do, traveling from Gardena to Pasadena, got a nasty mean face but to be afraid, I'm as passive as a lamb. I am Kevin Salvador What is PCC to me?
